Prayers for Houston

I’ve been pretty distracted today.  One of my dearest friends has been affected by Hurricane Harvey and the heavy rains in Houston, TX.  All day I have been thinking about her family and wondering if they are okay.  The last time we spoke her family had taken shelter with her niece.  When I asked her how she remains so calm, her only response was “God.”

My friend is a Believer and therefore she is not stressed about the water that is expected to flood her subdivision after one of the levees is opened later today.  “Its only material things,” she said.  So knowing that she has placed her faith in God has made it a bit easier for me to understand why she is so calm.  Her unyielding faith is a lesson to us all that we should not have anxiety about things that we have no control over. You have to remember that God is in control and that we have to put our faith in Him.

One thing that that I have witnessed during all of this devastation is the hope that exists among our fellow man when I turn on the news.  To see the individual people and families thank God after escaping the floods with only the clothes on their backs shows the resiliency of people in this country. Material things really mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. Hurricane Harvey is truly a reminder to us all that God is the one who is really in control and he is the one who determines our fate.

So my prayers go out to those affected by the devastation in and around southwest Texas. May God keep you during this storm and place a guard of protection around you. I also pray for the people in our country to wake-up and realize that we all need each other right now.  Its not about race, gender, age, nationality, religion, creed, nor color. None of these things, which have divided our country in recent weeks, mean anything.  Today we are one, just trying to survive.
